There has been a lot of discussion in the media about the subject of wellness. What is wellness and what does it mean to achieve it? Many celebrities have found that regular chiropractic care is their ticket to good health. Of Course we need to at least attempt to eat right in our daily hectic lives and it is also important to exercise at least three times per week for 20 minutes each session, but realize that if the nervous system, which controls all functions of the body, is not able to perform at 100%, then we have not achieved wellness. Dan O’Brien, 1996 Olympic gold medallist in the decathlon, said “you obviously cannot compete at your fullest if you are not in alignment. It was the holistic idea that I liked about chiropractic. I really think chiropractic is essential in running. If I could put a percentage on it, I think I compete eight to ten percent better from regular chiropractic care if not more. It is essential for me and for my training routine.” Ten percent is a huge amount for an athlete or for anyone for that matter. For Dan O’Brien it would have been the difference between the gold metal and maybe not even making the team. Can you imagine if your entire life improved by ten percent? How about a ten percent improvement in our normal balance? If your entire body were functioning ten percent better, it would make a huge difference. You would enjoy a much healthier, happier and energetic life. What it is that Dan O’Brien knows about wellness and chiropractic that unfortunately most people do not know? Why does he receive chiropractic wellness care to help him to be at his best and his healthiest? The answer is that Dan O’Brien knows that health is not just how you feel. For example, he knows that you can feel perfectly fine and still not be healthy. Did you ever know someone who thought that they were healthy and all of a sudden had a heart attack? Do you know someone who was fine one day and then what seems like all of a sudden is diagnosed with cancer or diabetes? Some conditions take 10,20,or 30 years before they show any outward symptoms that your doctor may be able to identify. Patients with osteoporosis or a thinning of bones must have at least 30 to 40% bone loss before it can be detected on x-ray. The process happens so slowly over time that we tend to accept these weaknesses as normal and go on never knowing that we are missing out, but when a top athlete like Dan O’Brien challenges his physical and mental limits every day he knows that he has to keep track of his function and performance in relationship to his wellness potential. Wellness is not simply the absence of disease. Wellness means performing 100% of the time whether that means on the track field or in the field we call life. Chiropractic wellness care in combination with proper eating habits and exercise is a way to achieve true wellness.
So in this age of better health in our own critical review of our day-to-day lives, remember that wellness can be achieved, but if you are missing it by ten percent, you are truly not well.
