Achieving True Wellness

There has been a lot of discussion in the media about the subject of wellness.  What is wellness and what does it mean to achieve it?  Many celebrities have found that regular chiropractic care is their ticket to good health.  Of course, we need to at least attempt to eat right in our daily hectic lives and it is also vitally important to exercise at least three times per week for 20 minutes each session.

We realize that if the nervous system, which controls all functions of the body, is not able to perform at 100%, then we have not achieved the status of true wellness.  Dan O’Brien, the 1996 Olympic gold medallist in the decathlon, said, “You obviously cannot compete at your fullest if you are not in alignment.  It was the holistic idea that I liked about chiropractic.  I really think that chiropractic is essential in running.  If I could put a percentage on it, I think I compete 8-10% better from regular chiropractic care, if not more.  It is essential for me and for my training routine.”

10% is a huge amount for an athlete, or for anyone for that matter.  For Dan O’Brien it would have been the difference between the gold medal and maybe not even making the team.  Can you imagine if your entire life was improved by 10%?  What if your energy, sleep, healing ability and immune function were all improved by 10%?  How about a 10% improvement in our normal balance?  If your entire body were functioning 10% better, it would make a huge difference.  You would enjoy a much healthier, happier and energetic life.

What is it that Dan O’Brien knows about wellness and chiropractic that unfortunately most people do not know?  Why does he receive chiropractic wellness care to help him to be at his best and his healthiest?  The answer is that Dan O’Brien knows that health is not just how you feel.  For example, he knows that you can feel perfectly fine and still not be healthy.  Did you ever know someone who thought that they were healthy and all of a sudden had a heart attack?  Do you know someone who was fine one day and then, what seems like all of a sudden, is diagnosed with cancer or diabetes or some other type of debilitating disease?  Some conditions take 10, 20 or 30 years before they show any outward symptoms that your doctor may be able to identify.  Patients with osteoporosis, or a thinning of bone, must have at least 30-40% bone loss before it can be detected on a regular x-ray.  The process happens so slowly over time that we tend to accept these weaknesses as normal and go on, never knowing that we are missing out.

When a top athlete like Dan O’Brien challenges his physical and mental limits every day, he knows that he has to keep track of his function and performance in relationship to his wellness potential.  Wellness is not simply the absence of disease.  Wellness means performing at 100% all of the time, whether that means on the track field or the field of life.  Chiropractic wellness care, in combination with proper eating habits and exercise, is a way to achieve true wellness.  So, in this age of better health, we need to have a more critical review of our day-to-day lives.

Please remember that wellness can be achieved, but if you are missing it by 10%, you are truly not well.  Just because you are in the gym three times per week does not mean that you are functioning at 100%.  You cannot just exercise the problems away.  You must get to the root cause and find out precisely what the body is trying to tell you.  It is unfortunately difficult to understand what the body is saying when you have artificially changed the scenario by taking medication.  Medication, whether prescribed or over-the-counter, can have its own set of side effects.  As I tell people every day in the office, those artificial means of trying to change your physiology or your health will never allow you to achieve 100% wellness.  Wellness can only be achieved through a natural process of allowing the body to function and to work at 100% capacity.

Many people ask me how to achieve 100% wellness.  I tell them to look at a 10-step procedure for achieving 100% wellness in the understanding that there are no short cuts or quick fixes.  Wellness takes time.  I know that in today’s fast-paced life of the average American, time can be a dirty word, but please remember that the body has it’s own time factors and certainly is not concerned with all the things on your to do list.  The human body is a magnificent machine, which when working properly will do all that it can to help heal itself from within.

So, let’s look into this 10-step process to achieve wellness.

  1. Do no harm.  It is important to review any medications that you are on and discuss these with your doctor to determine if any or all can be deleted.  Don’t forget, even over-the-counter medications have side effects.

  1. Drink more water.  You have heard it before, but many people are not drinking enough water.  Dehydration is a very common problem in today’s society, particularly when we spend most of our time drinking fluids that are filled with caffeine.

  1. Follow a diet that is more of six little meals a day as opposed to the traditional three squares a day.  In today’s society, I don’t know anyone who has three squares a day, or even what that means.  Everyone will want a snack and feel hunger, but if we adapt a program of healthy snacking and six meals a day, we will put a lot less stress on our pancreas.

  1. Get regular amounts of sleep on a regular basis.  This may seem like a silly request, but you can’t go to bed at 4:00 a.m. and sleep until noon on Saturday morning and then expect to be able to be up at 6:00 a.m. for work on Monday.  People that work shift work obviously have a much more difficult time with this and I feel that the immune system is vastly depleted simply by irregular sleep schedules.  Sleeping in is not all it’s cracked up to be.  Get up and go to bed at the same time every day, whether it is a weekday or the weekend.

  1. Utilize a more natural approach to your health.  Avoid processed foods as much as possible.  Eat fresh whenever possible and realize that a good rule of thumb is to stay away from all the other hands that get to your food.

  1. Live a more natural way of living.  Of course, we need sunlight in order to get adequate amounts of vitamin D, but don’t substitute that with an artificial sun tanning procedure.

  1. Avoid harsh chemicals in the products that you use.  Have you ever looked at the ingredients of a tube of toothpaste?  The cleaners in most commercial toothpaste would probably be too strong to even put your hands into and yet we put these things into our mouths.  Look for products that are more environmentally friendly as well as friendly to your own environment, your body.  These days, companies have put way too many things into way too many products just to make them look nice and smell nice.  We don’t need it.

  1. Put exercise into your daily lifestyle.  Obviously, things like a walk around the park or a walk at lunchtime at work are ideal ways to make exercise a part of the routine.  If you don’t like to run, then do something else.  Just do it.

  1. Don’t forget the spiritual side of health.  Understand the bigger picture and maybe you can start by simply meditating.

  1. If you have a chance of being healthier and living longer, you have an even better chance if you develop a routine of good health with a qualified healthcare practitioner.  Of course, I always recommend chiropractic manipulation for good alignment, massage therapy for muscle work, and think about adding your own programs of yoga or simply performing daily stretching exercises.  The best bet is to develop a good working relationship with a qualified healthcare practitioner to help you through your journey.  You need someone to bounce things off of and discuss concerns you have and Sally is not your best source of qualified health information.  The internet gives us lots of information, but don’t believe everything you read or see.  I recommend developing a regular plan of healthy activity and connecting with a qualified healthcare practitioner who understands wellness.

A 10-step procedure to wellness can only be achieved with the support of a qualified healthcare practitioner and the support of family and friends.  So I suggest everyone attempt to enroll a spouse, family member or friend into their program to ensure everyone’s success.
